Tragedy In Lewiston
On Wednesday October 25, 18 people were killed and, 13 more injured in a mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine as confirmed by authorities and Governor Janet Mills (she/her) (D). The Lewiston shooting is the 2nd shooting on record in the United States in 2023 that killed 10 or more people. Last year also had 2 occasions. A manhunt was on for the killer, suspected to be 40-year-old man Robert Card, who was found dead on Friday the 27th.
Card was in the Army Reserve since 2002, and also a firearms instructor and petroleum supply specialist based in Saco, Maine. Card was ranked as a Sergeant First Class. Card had a history of mental health issues that included a two-week stay at a mental health facility. Card’s sister-in-law, Katie O’Neill said that he did not have a lengthy history of issues but has had mental health episodes as of late. Clifford Steeves, a Massachusetts man, who was with Card in the reserves, said that he saw no concerning signs. The suspect’s brother, Ryan, urged upon his brother to turn himself in and stated the family was helping law enforcement.
President Joe Biden (he/him) (D) called upon Republicans to work with Democrats to ban assault weapons and high-storage magazines, enact universal background checks, mandate safe storage, and end immunity from liability for gun manufacturers. Vice President Kamala Harris (she/her) (D) sent her sympathies and said there should not be a debate between safety and upholding the second amendment, which states that people have the right to bear arms, further adding to the debate over guns.
