BSU Winter Sports Preview
BSU Athletics is kicking off their winter sports season in just a few days. The winter sports contain the men’s and women’s basketball teams, wrestling, and indoor track & field. The men’s basketball team starts their season with a game on November 8 against Anna Maria. The women’s team has their first game not long after on November 14 against Babson College. Our wrestling team has their first meet on November 3 with the University of Southern Maine. The indoor Track & Field season begins on December 2 at Suffolk Relays in Boston.
In a recent poll, the women’s basketball team was selected to finish first place again in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference. The team won the MASCAC Championship and moved on to the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to #9 Messiah College. The team is coached by the MASCAC coach of the year and BSU Hall of Famer, Bridgett Casey (she/her). Some key players to pay attention to are Kylie Grassi (she/her), Sophia Gaucher (she/her), and Caroline Tripp (she/her). This team has two transfers, Victoria Andrewski (she/her) who played on the Dean College Bulldogs last season. The other is Skye Ryan (she/her), who came from Division II American International College in Springfield.
Similarly, the men’s basketball team was picked to finish in 2nd place in the MASCAC. Some of the highlight players to look out for this year are Emerson Halbleib (he/him), the reigning defensive player of the year, and Dante Kikuba (he/him), the rookie of the year. Halbleib, Kikuba, Justin Parsons (he/him), and Alex Gonzalez (he/him) are the captains of the 2023-24 men’s basketball squad. The team also has a transfer named Joshua Vargas (he/him), who came from Division II CUNY-College of Staten Island.
The track & field team is coached by Christine Klobier (she/her) and will finish up their season on February 10th when they go to the MASCAC Championships at Smith College in Northampton.
The wrestling team has their first meet tomorrow with the University of Southern Maine. The team features 16 freshmen wrestlers joining their team this season. The team captains are senior Sean McCullough (he/him) and junior Michael Hopkins (he/him).
