Chiefs Face Off Against 49ers in Super Bowl Rematch
After Conference Championship weekend, the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers will be facing each other in Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas on Sunday, February 11 on CBS/WBZ-TV. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs will be playing in their fourth Super Bowl in the last five seasons. At 28-years old, Mahomes is now the youngest quarterback to ever play in four Super Bowls. So far his record stands 2-1, with the lone loss coming against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Meanwhile, the 49ers will be making their third Super Bowl appearance in the last 11 years and will look to win it’s sixth championship, which would tie with the Patriots and Steelers for most Super Bowl wins by a team.
This matchup will be a rematch of Super Bowl LIV in Miami in 2020. This was Patrick Mahomes first Super Bowl win, against former Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. The Chiefs won 31-20, after they were down by 10 in the third quarter.
The Chiefs are the AFC Champions after winning the championship game in Baltimore against the no. 1 seeded Ravens by a score of 17-10. The Chiefs had struggles during the regular season with their receiving core having the most drops in the league and falling into the no.3 seed. This led Mahomes to play his first ever road playoff game against the Buffalo Bills in the Divisional Round, which they would end up winning.
The 49ers were the NFC Championship after their victory against the Detroit Lions, who were searching for their first ever Super Bowl appearance. This was the third straight appearance in the championship game and the fourth in the last five years for the 49ers. The 49ers came back from 17 points at halftime to win 34-31, bringing former Mr. Irrelevant Pick (last pick in the NFL Draft) Brock Purdy to his first Super Bowl.
The 49ers are the favorite in the Vegas odds, where they are projected to win by 2.5 points. Mahomes will be looking to take the Chiefs to their second straight Super Bowl victory, which would be the first time since the 2003-04 Patriots that a team had back-to-back Super Bowl wins.
