Gaming Industry Layoffs Continue Into 2024

The gaming industry is experiencing a falter. Continuing the trend from the past year, over 6,000 workers have lost their jobs for major companies such as Microsoft and Unity. With the world only being into 2024 for a few weeks and 2023’s layoffs in gaming being over 10,000 through the entire year, it raises the question of how the gaming industry began losing workers so quickly.

The answer begins with the Covid-19 pandemic, which was a boom for the gaming industry. That being said, this big increase was relatively short-term. As profits went up, companies assumed this was a new normal, and began taking on new projects and hiring new workers. When profits fell back to their pre-pandemic levels, there were now excess workers, more projects, and less money. Thus, the layoffs began.

This is not only affecting the now jobless developers but the players as well. With big video games such as Baldur’s Gate 3 showing just how much video game developers are capable of, the expectations that players have for games increased as well. With fewer workers, making these various projects and meeting expectations was not obtainable. The result is the abandoning of various projects, which leaves players disappointed and employees jobless.

One suggested solution to this issue is the unionizing of game workers, but there is no guarantee that it will stop the loss of jobs. As the gaming industry moves forward, the effects of these layoffs are unpredictable for these companies; however, either way, they will absolutely be seen.
