BEAM: Illuminating Bridgewater’s Photonics and Optics Organization
Bridgewater Emission Absorption Manipulators (BEAM) is a student organization on campus dedicated to creating a passionate community for those interested in photonics and optics, while also networking and creating opportunities for students to take their knowledge beyond the classroom.
For those who are unaware of what optics or photonics are, optics is the study of light’s properties, while photonics is the study of the technology utilizing light. These two work together and create important jobs that affect our everyday lives. For example, take a look at your phone or computer. Those crucial microchips inside that allow the device to run utilize light in their development. Without dedicated individuals in the fields of photonics and optics, our world would be an extremely different place.
But what does BEAM do? In addition to furthering the knowledge of those who have focused their studies on light science, newcomers to the field can get a look into what light can do through introductory talks. Traveling opportunities allow members to visit community events and labs where students can network with professionals and engage with peers to develop an understanding and appreciation for the various careers that utilize the power of light.
In addition to traveling for events, BEAM also works with Career Services to host events as well. Annual Spring conferences, open to both members and the public, allow people to listen in on talks by industry and academic professionals, and engage in activities that increase their understanding of photonics and optics.
“I would recommend BEAM to others to promote community engagement and to participate in a place where students can discuss topics in physics, photonics, and optics in a welcoming, kind, and educational place,” says BEAM President, Janelle Murphy (she/her). “We plan to continue having speakers come to campus to speak to our members and the community, have field trips to universities to expose members to opportunities in their field of study, and to engage in community and service, and participate in university-wide events.”
