Celebrating Latine Heritage at BSU!
On September 25, BSU held a celebration of Latine heritage in the RSU ballroom. To start the night out, attendees were greeted to a gallery walk of various Latine American countries. Each table was set up with different information, such as flag history, fun facts, and even some items like hand-woven bags. In addition, there was a lot of information regarding courses that connect to Latin American, Caribbean, and Latine Studies for students who wanted to further their knowledge.
Afterwards, the entire group was seated and treated to some really good food. I took a seat with some friends I ran into, and we shared a bit about where we come from and caught up with each other. During this time, students also took the stage to speak on their heritage. It is through their heritage that they feel a sense of community with others and form strong connections.
To conclude the night, there were a few games put on. Hidden under a few of the chairs were special plates that invited a lucky three to try and hit a pinata, which surprisingly proved to be difficult, especially considering the required spinning before a swing. The other game the group played was Lotería, which is essentially bingo. As is tradition with any bingo-type event at BSU, I was so close to winning yet not lucky enough, but I still had a lot of fun!
The Latin Student Alliance plans to continue holding events and general meetings throughout the semester, and after the night, I can’t wait to see what other celebrations they hold. For more information, you can check out their official page on Engage.
