2024 NFL Trade Deadline Recap

On November 5, the 2024 NFL Trade Deadline showcased a series of impactful moves by several teams looking to bolster their rosters for playoff contention or to build for the future.

Before deadline day, there were multiple trades that went down. Receiver Devante Adams joined the New York Jets from the Las Vegas Raiders, Receiver Amari Cooper was traded from the Cleveland Browns to the Buffalo Bills, and Receiver DeAndre Hopkins went from the Tennessee Titans to the Kansas City Chiefs.

On deadline day, the most notable of trades were Receiver Mike Williams joining the Pittsburgh Steelers from the New York Jets, Receiver Diontee Johnson going from the Carolina Panthers to the Baltimore Ravens, and Cornerback Marshon Lattimore being sent to the Washington Commanders from the New Orleans Saints. These moves marked win-now strategies, filling key holes within their respective teams.

Other teams made more minor trades to help improve their team. Za’Darius Smith joined the Lions, giving Detroit much-needed pass-rushing help. Tackle Cam Robinson was sent from the Jacksonville Jaguars to the Minnesota Vikings to help fill in for Tackle Christain Darrisaw, who is out for the season. Cornerback Tre’Davious White was also traded to the Baltimore Ravens from the Las Angeles Rams, adding much-needed help to a poor pass defense.

Other teams made moves that allowed them to focus on the future. The Cleveland Browns, recognizing their season’s challenges, traded away veterans like Cooper and Smith to help save money. On the other hand, the Dallas Cowboys, who are struggling in the NFC East and dealing with numerous injuries, traded for young receiver Johnathon Mingo in hopes he could grow into a productive player in the future.

After another exciting year of trades, the NFL is primed for an exciting second half of the year. With multiple teams revamped with incoming talent, time will tell which trades pay off.
