Fun for First-Gen Students
On Friday November 8, the Division for Student Life put on the First-Generation Celebration. The event means to represent and show the importance of students who are of the first generation in their family to attend college. The event was very inspiring and made me feel seen as a first-generation student. The Division for Student Life had plenty of activities for the event such as a photobooth, a raffle for 50 flex dollars, and of course, Bristaco was in attendance.
To be a first-generation student means that no one else in your immediate family has attended college, or college-level programs. There are several factors that prevent family members from attending college, but first-generation students show that there is a way to follow what you want to succeed. A lot of students that are first-generation feel overwhelmed and confused by the college process, but BSU makes sure to provide resources to help support them. First-generation students often struggle to find their footing in college, because they do not always have someone to lean on with the experience that they need.
I found this event to be very close to me, because I am a first-generation student myself. I appreciate that BSU highlights us first-generation students because it really shows the accomplishment that being a first-generation student is. Students can get connected on campus for events like this one by keeping up with Engage BSU postings about events on campus. There are events on campus for everyone, all it takes is a little digging and you can end up with a largely positive experience.
