Ink & Poet Society Holds Poetry Open Mic Night at BSU!
On November 6, BSU’s Ink & Poet Society hosted a Poetry Open Mic Night in the Horace Mann Auditorium. Admittedly, I am a very shy person and was a bit scared to read a poem in front of other people, but by the end of the night, I was more than happy I went.
The way the event worked is that anyone who showed up could come to the front of the stage and read either a short story or a poem. You read what you want to read, and then someone else comes up. It’s as simple as that, and if you don’t want to read something, that’s fine too. It was a very relaxed event, which definitely helped with my shyness.
In addition to the poetry reading, one big highlight of this event was getting the chance to meet new people and discuss their writing. It was nice to hear about what other people were working on and some of their inspirations behind it.
Speaking of inspiration, hearing what other people presented was a lot of fun and left me motivated to write. One student came to the front and read what was possibly one of the best short stories I have ever heard, and it left me feeling very inspired. Any writer knows that one of the hardest steps to writing is getting past that initial lack of motivation, but I went back to my dorm room and ended up writing a poem.
The Ink & Poet Society meets every Monday at 4 p.m., in Maxwell Library LIB 104, and while there are no scheduled open mic nights left in the semester, be sure to be on the lookout for them in the future.
