Is This Even Real?

Dude, are we even real? Like… what if this is all just a dream, or maybe like a simulation, bro?

Kind of sounds like a conversation on every single white guy’s podcast that they made because they think that they hold the key to every answer in the universe. Spoiler alert, they don’t. But hey, what if they are somehow right? What if none of this is real?

Our existence as not only a species but, the ecosystem and environment that we find ourselves in perplexes me to no end. How could we possibly have gotten so lucky? It’s like that ‘Butterfly Effect’ that is always talked about with time travel. The series of events that led to our existence is one in an unfathomably large number.

So what if it was not up to chance? What if some outside force is the reason that everything has happened, some robot army from The Matrix is simulating a reality for us to live in. Or we don’t even exist, there is no other world where we are all sitting in sacks of goo waiting for Neo to save us all. Simply everything from the food we eat, to who we are is just a series of ones and zeros zipping through the motherboard of a supercomputer.

Another favorite existentialist thought experiment of mine is the Boltzmann Brain. It states that the probability of intelligent life (us) developing is just about the same as a cloud of gas having the right chemical or electrical makeup to basically turn into a floating brain in space that is imaging every aspect of our reality.

So, what do you think reader, are you real? Are you the one brain-sitting in space making up the words written on this page, making up even me–the writer? Or did we just get that lucky?

Looking at Room Selection

Room selection is war. It is an all-out battle between groups of friends; groups of frenemies; and of course, the people who just want to live in a specific dorm. “What? You forgot to fill out your housing form?!” shouts Random Student A. “You forgot to select the room we wanted?!” yells Random Student B. […]

An Ode to Vinted

Why does it feel like every time I walk into a store nowadays, I’m just looking at a landfill. Like, seriously, all the clothes are tacky, out of style, and way overpriced. It’s gotten to the point where I think around 70% of my closet is thrifted, handed-down clothes or discounted clothes. I am hardly […]
