Meet Robbie Soucy: the President, the Diver, the Group Leader
Some people may see Robbie Soucy in the Kelly Gym on Saturday mornings at the Children’s Physical and Developmental Clinic (CPDC). His teammates see him on afternoons at the pool deck, and his fraternity brothers see him leading chapter. Robbie Soucy is the definition of a go-getter. With a passion for helping others and a goal of making a difference, Soucy hits just about every mark of what it means to be a BSU Bear.
As a senior at Bridgewater State, Soucy is finishing up a degree in physical education with a minor in coaching. Following in the footsteps of relatives who are educators, Robbie hopes to someday become an elementary school physical education teacher and be a high school coach after the school day ends. As a former three-season athlete, Robbie is looking to commit lots of his career to sports and staying active, calling it “the dream.” With this career goal in mind, Robbie hopes to someday move back to pursue his career in his home state of Maine.
Robbie’s day does not just end at the classes he takes for his degree. Outside of class, Robbie is a part of three different organizations on campus: CPDC, Sigma Pi, and BSU’s Swim and Dive Team.
At CPDC, Robbie is a group leader, which tasks him with overseeing a group of clinicians and the children they work with. His dedication to the organization reveals itself through the passion he has carried since joining in the Spring semester of his sophomore year. “I actually went for the first time because it was a requirement for one of the classes I was taking at the time,” said Soucy. “I actually enjoyed it so much that I asked if I could just keep going.”
In Sigma Pi, Soucy is not just the President of the organization, but a very active and supportive brother. After joining the Spring semester of his first year at BSU, Soucy became quickly involved within the organization, maintaining four different positions before going out for president. When rushing, Soucy recalled that he made a promise to the current president at that time. “I guess I was being pretty ambitious,” said Soucy. “I told him I wanted to be president someday, and I feel like I needed to live up to that if I told him.”
After joining the BSU’s swimming and diving team a little over a month ago, Robbie told me about his first experience back as a student athlete. “It was crazy,” said Soucy. “I had felt the same butterflies in my stomach the morning before the meet just like I used to before football games.”
Although Robbie has never been a professional swimmer, he joined the diving team and has been picking up skills fairly quickly. “There is still a lot I need to learn how to do, but I feel like I’ve learned a lot already from the other divers,” said Soucy. “I love being an athlete again, but the team is really what makes it so worth it.”
