Trump Wins the 2024 Presidential Election
On the early morning of Wednesday, November 6, 2024, Donald Trump won the election and became the 47th president of the United States. As the United States entered this election, it was clear the election could go either way. Poll forecasters could not make solid conclusions about who would ultimately come out on top, and concluded that either candidate could be declared the winner. However, as polls began to close and numbers began to roll in, Trump took the lead.
As the night went on, Trump’s lead over Harris grew exponentially. Harris trailed behind her opponent, but never could quite catch up despite several significant wins. Late in the night, the numbers did not look good for Harris, but her supporters and her held onto hope that the blue votes in larger cities within battleground states would give Harris the numbers she needed to surpass her opponent. Trump remained confident throughout the night and delivered a victory speech around 3:30 AM EST. He thanked his supporters for their persistent belief in him and stated: “Together we can truly make America great again for all Americans.”
Trump was officially named the winner by the AP around 6:00 AM EST. Trump won all seven battleground states, including the six he lost in the 2020 election. Later that day, Harris conceded in a speech at Howard University, urging her supporters to accept the results, but not give up the fight for justice. Despite her defeat, Harris claims she is not done and urges her supporters not to give up, stating: “We will continue to wage this fight in the voting booth, in the courts, and in the public square. And we will also wage it in how we live our lives—by treating one another with kindness and respect.”
The final count for electoral votes has Trump with 312 electoral votes and Harris with 226 electoral votes.
In addition to the presidential battle, there were 34 Senate seats, all 435 House seats, and 11 Governor spots on ballots throughout the country. Republicans are projected to have the majority in the Senate after flipping three seats. Within the house, there are still 18 seats to be called, but the Republicans have the lead (as of 11/11/2024). Republicans also came up on top of the governor race with eight Republican Governors elected and three Democrat Governors elected.
