BSU’s MRISJ Packs Over 12,000 Meals For Those In Need On MLK Jr. Day of Service
One of Bridgewater State University’s core values is serving the community. That is exactly what BSU’s Martin Richard Institute for Social Justice did for MLK Jr. day of service.
The Martin Richard Institute for Social Justice is an organization at BSU dedicated to social justice and serving those in need. MRISJ has many different ways for people to get involved in serving their community, from building care packages for sexual assault victims to helping build homes with habitat for humanity.
One large project that MRISJ is involved in is the End Hunger New England-Outreach Program in Pembroke. On January 25, BSU students packed over 12,000 meals with MRISJ. These thousands of meals were packaged and were labelled to be sent to various locations. The meals were sent to LA for victims of the wildfires, Marshfield Veterans and the Boston Food Bank.
The Comment spoke with the Community Programs Manager at MRISJ, Laura Mulvey, about the MLK Jr. day of service. Mulvey spoke about how rewarding her experience has been at the organization, stating, “I am honored to be a part of the journey of students as they develop their civic agency and grow from a one-time volunteer, into a student who is deeply engaged in their community and who see themselves as community leaders.”
Mulvey encouraged people to get involved with volunteering for MRISJ for the deep sense of community fulfillment and belonging it provides. “I encourage people to get involved because of the sense of community, belonging, and inspiration that comes from being part of our collective work. Many people find friends and colleagues with shared values and passions which further connects people to one another and the work of social change.”
