Sex Week at BSU
Sex. It’s oftentimes an incredibly uncomfortable or touchy subject for many young adults to take seriously. However, sexual education is currently more important than ever, as many areas within the United States have begun to crack down on sexual health resources and sexual education for public schools.
The Sexual Violence and Advocacy Center is making great strides to combat this, for all Bridgewater State students to feel accepted, educated, and safe with their own sexual journeys. Last week, the SVAS center organized an official “Sex Week,” with multiple activities and booths happening all around campus throughout the entire week. Many of these booths included sexual art, education on sexual toys or resources, and free forms of protection for all students.
I was lucky enough to attend both their “Sex Carnival” on Wednesday and the incredibly fun “Sex Bingo Night” on Friday! Each event was very exhilarating, with an amazing number of free resources and fun games, such as “dildo ring toss” and their very own bingo night with fun prizes.
When asking why this week is so important for Bridgewater students, Kristina Tamasco, an employee at the SVAS center, stated that “These events help break sexual stigma and make this campus a safer place.”
Along with this, the events highlighted many important resources located around campus, such as free pregnancy and STD testing at the Wellness Center. When talking to Valerie Bassett, Director of Community Health and Prevention with the Wellness Center, she stated that “We’re often uncomfortable to talk about sex and sexual health, but it’s a very important part of health and wellness. We want to promote sexual wellness as an important part of one’s health and to promote pleasure as a positive thing.”
Personally, I couldn’t agree more with these sentiments; to have a completely safe and healthy college campus, sexual education and resources are necessary to provide to students. Just because “Sex Week” is over, it doesn’t mean that these resources are no longer available on campus. Any student is encouraged to visit the Sexual Violence and Wellness Center, located in Moakley 130, if they ever need any confidential sexual protection or support.
