Student Organization Spotlight: Global Brigades BSU
Are you interested in travel and service work? Then I’ve got the organization for you! Global Brigades BSU is a new student organization on campus that works with the Global Brigades organization to plan and fundraise trips to other countries to perform service work. To find out more, I interviewed the club’s secretary, Sophia Vitorino (they/them).
So, what do these service trips entail? Last year, the group traveled to Panama, where they worked to improve a village’s water source by digging out more room for water to be collected and putting in new pipes. This year, the trip is planned to be volunteer work at a medical clinic, though that doesn’t mean you need any previous experience in medical work or speaking Spanish.
But before you can go anywhere, you have to get the money for it. Each member is responsible for fundraising towards either their own goal or the group itself. There are a lot of different ways to do this, and creativity with fundraising is very welcomed. Last year, the group was able to fundraise enough to send around 15 people, so the collaborative effort is certainly effective.
Global Brigades holds meetings every Monday at 4:00 p.m. in RSU 119. These meetings cover a wide variety of activities, from fun games of Kahoot and Spanish lessons to fundraising logistics. For those looking to become a part of this wonderful organization or even if you just want to check it out, these meetings would be a good place to start. The club is always looking for new members, and it is a great place to build friendships while working towards a good cause.
