Title IX Changes
You should have received the email on January 13, 2025, from BSU President Fred Clark stating that there have been alterations to the Title IX policy on a federal level. What are these alterations, and what does this mean for BSU’s Title IX policies going forward? Well, it is safe to say that BSU is working to ensure not many changes regarding whom the protections were directed at are to come.
So, what were these changes made to the policy? Well, on January 9 of this year, the U.S. District Court in Kentucky issued a national decree that deserts the 2024 Title IX regulations. The changes specifically altered rules for discrimination protection based on gender and/or sexual identity. Moreover, the revisions also altered how sexual assault cases are handled on campuses.
The changes mean to target transgender individuals, as the Trump administration is very vocal in their alignments with anti-transgender ideology. The changes also impact transgender athletes, barring them from playing on the team that matches their gender identity, and only allowing individuals to play on the same teams as their birth sex.
The administration at BSU assured students in their email in early January that they will be working to make sure all students have access to a safe, non-discriminatory space. Updates on the ruling are expected to come in the near future.
