2025 March Madness Preview
Upcoming is every college basketball fan’s favorite time of year: March Madness. Throughout March, 64 Division 1 teams will battle it out on the court for the coveted championship title. Both men’s and women’s teams will participate in the tournament, including UConn, last year’s men’s tournament victors, and the University of South Carolina, winners of the 2024 women’s tournament.
Teams selected for March Madness are placed at a seed by NCAA committee members and settled in their respective region. For the men’s tournament, teams including Duke, Auburn, University of Florida, and Houston have fallen at the number 1 seed, making them favored to win the tournament. While these teams are expected to perform well, lower-seated teams known as “Cinderella teams” can “upset” those at higher seeds. Twelfth seed McNeese beat Clemson in a close matchup with a final score of 69-67, decreasing the number of perfect brackets remaining.
Recently, the phenomenon that is women’s basketball has taken the sports world by storm. With collegiate superstars such as Juju Watkins, Paige Bueckers, Kiki Iriafen, and Lauren Betts, the championship is expected to come down to fight in the final four by South Carolina, Uconn, USC, and UCLA. On the women’s side, upsets are far more unlikely to happen, as only 11 teams have made it to the final four without being a number 1 or 2 seed. Past champions South Carolina have already shown early domination in the tournament, dusting 16th seed Tennessee Tech 108- 48 in the round of 64.
March Madness is the perfect time of year for basketball enthusiasts and casual watchers alike to come together to watch the competitive, spirited event. The tournament kicks off on Tuesday, March 18, and ends with the national championship on April 7, 2025.
