A New Team is Coming to F1

On Monday, November 25, it was announced that General Motors (GM) and Andretti will partner to create a new F1 team starting in 2026. Becoming the sport’s 11th constructor (AKA team), this application initiated by Andretti Global will mark a historic period for Formula 1.

According to nbcnews.com, “F1 said in a statement that it ‘reached an agreement in principle with General Motors (GM) to support bringing GM/Cadillac as the eleventh team to the Formula 1 grid in 2026.'”

This means that the deal is set in place, but not legally binding or official just yet. However, the official agreement will likely happen in the coming weeks.

This collaboration will establish Cadillac, a division of GM, as the official brand of the racing team, signifying the entry of a second American-based team into the highly competitive realm of Formula 1 racing.

In addition to the brand partnership, the leadership of the team will be significantly bolstered by the appointment of Mario Andretti as the director of the team’s board. Mario Andretti, a legendary figure in motorsport and a former Formula 1 champion, brings with him an unparalleled wealth of experience and knowledge.

With this move also comes the competition between two American engine empires, GM and Ford. Earlier this year, Ford announced its partnership with Red Bull to become their power unit supplier. This long-standing rivalry will bring a new kind of competitiveness to the sport.

This announcement is incredibly exciting for the sport, as it not only enhances the competitive landscape, but also significantly boosts the marketability of Formula 1. The introduction of an additional team, especially one of American decent, opens up a plethora of opportunities for new sponsorship deals, increased fan engagement, and the potential for thrilling rivalries on and off the track.
