Did the Red Sox do Enough?
With the 2025 MLB season starting this week, there is a lot of hype around the Boston Red Sox this year. Many are conflicted on whether or not the Sox can truly compete or if they are still a year away. So, with this controversy comes the question: Did they do enough?
To recap, Boston made a series of moves that have drastically improved their major league roster. Trading for an ace in Garrett Crochet and signing an elite and experienced talent in Alex Bregman are moves that will have an immediate impact within the team. Crochet is a potential Cy Young candidate, while Bregman is an all-around great player who adds much-needed veteran leadership to the clubhouse.
In addition to these major moves, the Red Sox also made a couple of other splashes. With the likes of Starting Pitcher Walker Buehler, relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman, and pitcher Patrick Sandoval joining the team, Boston was able to address their problem regarding their pitching depth.
However, even with Boston making moves, it is still uncertain if they will translate. First off, the team is extremely young and outspoken. This brings into question whether or not the players will put the team first. The biggest problem Boston faces is their lineup. They have a great group of players; however, who will play where is what throughout the season is still unofficial. Bregman and Rafael Devers are both third basemen, which leaves Boston with two options: Move Devers to DH and keep Bregman at third, or move Bregman to second base and keep Devers at third. These types of problems can hinder a team’s success if not resolved quickly. Frustrated players can create a separate clubhouse, which is a poison to team success.
There is no doubt that Boston, if all goes well, has the talent to make a deep run in a weak American League. However, did they do enough to keep their players happy? Only time will tell.
