NBA’s Historic Trade Deadline Shakes up the League
The NBA had its trade deadline on February 6, and boy, did it not disappoint. Multiple teams contributed to blockbuster deals that could end up changing the landscape of not only their team but the entire NBA.
Superstar guard Luka Dončić headlined the most notable, and possibly one of the most shocking, trades in NBA history. Dončić, along with Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris, was traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers for star center Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick. The Utah Jazz were also part of the deal, as they received guard Jalen Hood-Schifino and two second-round picks.
Star guards De’Aaron Fox and Zach Lavine headlined another three-team trade, sending Fox to the San Antonio Spurs and Lavine to the Sacramento Kings. The Spurs also received guard Jordan McLaughlin; the Kings also received Sidy Cissoko, three first-round picks, and three second-round picks; the Bulls received Zach Collins, Kevin Huerter, Tre Jones, and a 2025 first-round pick.
Star Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler is headed to the Bay, as the Golden State Warriors are sending Andrew Wiggins, Kyle Anderson, Davion Mitchell, and a first-round pick to Miami. A last-gasp move for Golden State, Butler will look to finish his career and hopefully win a championship with the Warriors.
Pelicans star Branden Ingram was also moved on deadline day, as the Toronto Raptors received Ingram in exchange for Bruce Brown, Kelly Olynyk, and a first and second-round pick. This finally gets Ingram out of New Orleans and gives Toronto a building block to center their rebuild around.
These trades, along with many others, exceeded most expectations and have given the league a completely different outlook. We saw stars moving around like it was nothing, which is something we have not seen in a very long time. However, no matter what you may think, this deadline showed us that no player is safe, and fans should expect the unexpected moving forward.
