Patriots Start Spending
The 2025 NFL free agency period has officially opened, with many teams making big moves to improve their team. Among those big spenders is the New England Patriots, who made it a point to improve their roster.
After striking out on offensive pieces such as wide receiver Chris Godwin and left tackle Ronnie Stanley, the Pats got to work on improving the other side of the ball. The first of which was edge rusher Harold Landry Jr., who signed a three-year, $43.5 million contract. Landry has played for Patriots Head Coach Mike Vrabel during Vrabel’s tenure as the Tennessee Titans Head Coach.
The Pats then went out and signed Linebacker Robert Spillane, who signed a three-year, $37.5 million contract with New England. A tackling machine (158 tackles in 2024), Spillane adds much-needed versatility to the front seven of New England.
New England then locked down a lockdown corner to pair beside All-Pro Christian Gonzalez, signing Carlton Davis to a three-year, $60 million contract. With this signing, the Patriots solidified themselves as having potentially one of the best cornerback duos in football.
The next domino to fall was the signing of right tackle Morgan Moses. Moses signed a three-year, $24 million contract and will add crucial protection for quarterback Drake Maye.
At what seemed like the last minute, New England swooped in and signed 2024 standout defensive tackle Milton Williams to a four-year, $104 million contract. Williams will have the opportunity to make an immediate impact with the potential to become a game wrecker in the trenches.
Their most recent signing may be their biggest one yet, as wide receiver Stefon Diggs agreed to a three-year, $69 million contract to be Drake Maye’s number-one target. Diggs has the ability to fill arguably the biggest hole on the team.
With plenty of time still to go before the 2025-26 NFL season begins, New England seems to be off to a good start regarding improving their team. Though there still are big holes in the roster, such as receiver depth and a left tackle, fans can be assured that the New England Patriots have every intention of turning over a new leaf and becoming a competitive team.
