Samantha Souza Makes an Impression
BSU Field Hockey freshman Samantha Souza was recently recognized as the MASCAC rookie of the week on September 30th, after her stellar performance against Anna Marie College. Souza, a left forward, notched four goals on the day.
“We have a lot of built-up chemistry playing together,” Souza said when asked about Zuber in an interview with The Comment. Souza feels that she and her teammates can all trust each other and that all the players have a role.
Unlike many student-athletes, Souza was not recruited to BSU’s Field Hockey team. “I just decided on a whim to play,” she said.
Souza felt as though she had more options by choosing Bridgewater State. She was already familiar with the sport, as it was something new for her to do after she quit dancing at eleven years old. Her mother had played the sport in High School as well. Souza emailed coach Ashley Bishop and she put her on a workout list. From there, she participated in tryouts and made the team.
To prepare for a game, Souza likes to consume some sort of protein before heading to the locker room. Souza and the rest of the team are then given their game sheets which provide information about the opponent. Using this information, the team creates a gameplan to win. Souza and the team get into uniform and head out to the field for warmups.
For an away game, the team will board the bus before any warmups at the opposing venue. Halfway through the team’s travels, the players will begin to focus on the match ahead. For the first half, Souza will listen to music, but there is no specific music she listens to.
“I’m really happy to be playing field hockey here and that the group of girls have been so welcoming for everyone and I’m so happy I came to Bridgewater,” Souza said.
