Women’s Soccer Wins the MASCAC Championship
After a stellar regular season, one in which the Bears finished top of their conference, they faced their final challenge: a rematch of last year’s championship game against Westfield State on Sunday at 12 p.m.
The BSU Bears defeated the Westfield State Owls 3-2 in their victory on Sunday to win the conference championship.
The Bears fell to a 0-1 deficit after the Owls capitalized on a penalty kick. However, the Bears quickly responded, tying the game with a goal from junior Olivia Robarge. They later took the lead with a goal tipped in by a Westfield State Player off of a shot from junior Lauren Sellmayer. Extending their lead even further was Robarge, scoring her second goal of the game.
In a desperate comeback attempt, Westfield scored one more goal to make the game 3-2 in the final minutes. BSU held them off for the final minute before exploding into celebration.
Their championship win is a long time coming. Last year, the Bears also faced the Westfield Owls in the championship game, but were unable to come away with a victory, losing by one goal at home.
Defeating the Owls this year earns the BSU Bears their first title since 2013.
Additionally, with their playoff wins this season, coach Yasmina Carvalho has become the women’s soccer all-time winningest coach. This record was held previously by her own coach from when she played here at BSU.
The Bears will play in the NCAA Division III tournament this weekend in New Jersey. Their first game is on November 16 at 11 a.m. against The College of New Jersey. So, be sure to cheer on the Bears this weekend as they face off against the TCNJ Lions!
