Celebrate Earth Day with the MRISJ’s “Share the Harvest!”
The Martin Richard Institute for Social Justice has orchestrated some amazing volunteer events on campus throughout the year, and they’re ending it with a bang! On April 26, the organization will be returning to Dartmouth to participate in “Sharing the Harvest,” an event that they also participated in at the beginning of the year. The volunteer-driven community farm was originally established in 2006 with a goal to help fight hunger and feed those in the area. The MRISJ has regularly visited the site once a semester for the past few years, with each experience being incredibly memorable and rewarding for those who participated.
In honor of Earth Day, the MRISJ is organizing its final volunteering event of the year this Saturday, April 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. During this time, the group will focus on picking fresh produce and planting more to give to those in need. Kristina Tamasco, a former volunteer from the fall service trip, discussed how valuable the experience was for them. When asked why, they stated that “Actually touching the food, pulling it from the soil or the vine, and knowing that it was going to people who needed it made me feel capable and proud.”
This is not the only volunteer opportunity organized by the MRISJ, but just one of many that have been ongoing throughout the year. The institution stands to make an impact on the social injustices happening in our local areas while emphasizing advocacy, leadership, community building, and holding a strong connection with many grassroots organizations both in and out of Massachusetts.
