Tron: Ares Trailer Brings Life Back to a Forgotten Franchise

On April 5th, Disney released the official trailer for their upcoming film Tron: Ares. This comes after much anticipation built from casting announcements, trailer leaks, and showcases at conventions like CinemaCon. The film has been in development for a long time with Jared Leto, who will play Ares, being a long-time fan of the Tron franchise.

The online response to the trailer was a net positive, with most fans and critics citing impressive visuals including the color schemes and stunning use of CGI. Other fans held back from compliments to instead a dig at the casting of Jared Leto, who has carried a bad reputation for previous films such as Suicide Squad (2016) and House of Gucci. Otherwise, there was lots of excitement after the release of the trailer with many fans seeing their hope for the movie spring back to life.

The last time the Tron franchise was seen on the big screen was the 2010 picture Tron: Legacy. This film did not receive excessive media attention or praise at the time of release, but it has become a staple in the science fiction/action genre since its release. Fans of the franchise have waited patiently since that movie, only getting small games or a standalone T.V. show titled Tron: The Next Day in 2011. These fans have waited patiently (or not so patiently at times) for the next movie, and it is now on the horizon.

The cast features Jared Leto, Jeff Bridges, Greta Lee and Evan Peters. It is being helmed by Joachim Rønning who also directed Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and in 2024, Young Woman and the Sea.

Tron: Ares is set to release on October 10, 2025.
