Trump Administration Defunds University Medical Research
Donald Trump’s administration has set to defund American universities of their research funding which has since led to the termination of grants, studies, and several other forms of medical research.
The Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE) defunding of the research sector in American Universities not only has the potential to cut numerous jobs and internships, but also could result in dangerous repercussions nationwide.
Thus far, large amounts of National Institute of Health (NIH) grants have been cut and United States Agency for International Development (USAID) studies have come to an immediate halt. The NIH is the top healthcare research department nationwide and the dismissal of their finances will lead to a downturn in health resources across America, and consequently, around the world. Medical research is the foundation of the nation’s healthcare, and the expansion of these studies is the sole reason why modern-day medicine has reached the level it has.
Massachusetts is home to many universities that rely heavily on funding for their medical research capabilities, including one of the most prestigious of Ivy league schools: Harvard University. Harvard University has spent billions of dollars on research in the past decade alone and university federal funding fuels health research in America.
As a result of the funding cuts, Johns Hopkins University has terminated more than two-thousand jobs and Columbia University has halted many long-term studies. Alarmingly enough, the threat to NIH grants will lead to a stagnation in Alzheimers and cancer research, along with the interruption of various other health studies.
Across the country, universities are rescinding graduate school acceptances due to the threats to university research funding. In the wake of more than seventeen-hundred research grants being terminated, universities have made the decision to pull back graduate school offers due to uncertainty on what is to come.
Overall, the defunding of university medical research by the government agency, DOGE, will have catastrophic outcomes, including a downturn in jobs, research capabilities, and a dangerous downgrade in America’s healthcare.
