Why Disney’s Snow White is Truly Rotten
Although the trend of live-action Disney remakes has been continuous over the past few years, Disney’s most recent rendition of Snow White has demonstrated that this trend needs to stop. From poor pacing, terrible scenic and costume choices, and the controversies completely enveloping the film, the public is wholly done with Disney.
The largest and arguably most problematic element of the film in my opinion, is the fact that CGI was used in the creation of the seven dwarfs, instead of hiring actual actors. Although the voice acting of these characters are well-done, the fact of the matter is that Disney actively chose to exclude actors with dwarfism to participate in the making of this film; ultimately leaving them with even less job opportunities available. If The Wizard of Oz could hire 124 actors with dwarfism in 1939, Disney could have easily hired seven in 2025.
The plot of the film itself was incredibly boring- attempting to put a “girl power” spin on the original story, which simply doesn’t work, especially with such a classic yet misogynistic story like Snow White. The film currently has a 1.5/10 rating according to IMDb, with a 40% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. This isn’t for no reason, as another huge mistake of the film is its costume choice. It was incredibly difficult to focus on the usually amazing Rachel Zegler, for her outfit choice felt like something I would find at Spirit Halloween. Tacky, overwhelmingly yellow, and did not resonate with the original design of Snow White or compliment Zegler’s physical attributes. Zegler’s hair in the film could make a whole article for itself, as she seems to resemble Lord Farquaad from Shrek more than an actual Disney princess. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend this film, especially if you have any love for the original Snow White.
