Charlie Kirk Assassinated at Utah Event
Charlie Kirk was assassinated on September 10, 2025 while speaking to an audience at Utah Valley University.
Kirk had been answering a question about shooters when he was shot from a sniper positioned 142 yards away; he was pronounced dead a few hours later. The FBI and ATF led the investigation and were supported by the college and town police in Orem.
A man would be arrested shortly after the shooting, having claimed to be the shooter, though he would later be booked on an obstruction charge once they realized it couldn’t have been him. A second suspect was announced by FBI director Kash Patel to be in custody, though two hours later he would announce that he had been released following an interrogation.
The shooter evaded police for nearly 34 hours, before he was turned in by a family member to a sheriff.
The impact of the shooting echoed far outside of Utah and even America, with world leaders from Britain to Australia offering condolences to Kirk’s family. The killing rocked the political establishment and sent shockwaves through social media.
While both sides of the isle have condemned the shooting, many right-wing personalities have called for some form of retribution against what they see as a hostile left. Opinion polls taken shortly after the attack have shown that a minority of people on the left support political violence at a higher rate than those on the right, though in recent years more acts of political violence have come from people who claim to be a part of the right.
Government agencies from the Pentagon to the State Department began monitoring employee social media accounts and said they would fire anyone celebrating Kirk’s death. Vice President Vance promised that the government would punish left-wing donor groups he put at fault for the killing.
The shooting is yet another strong act of political violence from the last few years, which has seen the assassination of a state senator, the attempted firebombing of Governor Josh Shapiro’s house, two assassination attempts on then former, now current president, Donald Trump’s, the assault on then Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s wife, the January 6th Riot, a kidnapping plot against Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and the shooting of Steve Scalise at a congressional baseball game.
Kirk leaves behind a wife and two children, who had all attended the rally. His funeral will be on September 21st in Arizona.
