The Trump Administration’s Many Peace Agreements and Ceasefires
Since May of this year, President Donald Trump (R) and his team have been hard at work assisting with several agreements between countries in hopes of ending long-running conflicts or preventing them from spiraling into war. In a span between May 10, 2025 and August 8, 2025, the administration has struck numerous deals with foreign countries in an attempt to smooth over relations.
On May 10, a ceasefire was agreed to by India and Pakistan after a dispute began on May 7. The administration stepped in to assist with managing the conflict and prevent a potential nuclear conflict, as reported by The Guardian. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Pakistan’s officials, while Vice President J.D. Vance spoke to India’s officials. However, the ceasefire has proven tenuous, as there have been accusations of violations.
On June 27, the Washington Accord was struck by the foreign ministers of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Therese Kayikwamba Wagner and Olivier Nduhungirhere respectively. The agreement was mediated with the help of Qatar, a key ally for the United States, and its Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. Trump was very active in the meeting with the foreign ministers of both countries. The Accord ended a conflict that began in 2022 that had roots going back to the 1990s.
On July 28, a ceasefire was struck between Cambodia and Thailand. Trump spoke with both prime ministers on July 26. Rubio then sent delegates to Malaysia, where talks were also held, as reported by Reuters on July 27. The conflict was then brought to a halt the next day.
Not long after that, an agreement concerning the long-running conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan was signed. On August 8, Trump mediated the agreement between the two sides. The conflict began in 1988 due to a dispute over the Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan. The agreement was struck earlier this year and was officially signed into place on August 8.
The administration has been continuously working on an agreement between Russia and Ukraine, but as of this time, the Russo-Ukrainian war rages on. Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Alaska, land given to the US by Russia in 1867, on August 15. Trump met with various European leaders three days later at the White House. Afterwards, Finland’s president said the meeting made more progress in negotiations than in the three and a half years since the war broke out on February 24, 2022.
