USCIS to Station Armed Agents in Buildings to Make Arrests
On Thursday, September 4th, the Trump administration announced that the USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services), a service that grants green card status to immigrants, will be adding armed agents to enforce rules and make arrests. The USCIS stated that those who violate immigration laws will be under the will of these new agents who can investigate, arrest, and present them for prosecution. This addition is controversial as USCIS and enforcement agencies have historically been separate, especially at green card stations.
Many believe this tactic is being implemented to scare immigrants away from the border, but the Trump administration and USCIS Director Joseph Edlow argue that it will help crack down on immigrants committing crime and expand the already growing enforcement of terrorism task forces. Edlow states, “This historic moment will better address immigration crimes, hold those that perpetrate immigration fraud accountable, and act as a force multiplier for DHS and our federal law enforcement partners.”
Former senior Department of Homeland Security member Jason Houer argues that increased enforcement takes the spot of where there were benefits for immigrants in organizations like USCIS. He states, “There’s no place now for migrants to feel like they have an environment to seek refuge, to seek a legal pathway, without there being potentially immediate consequences for arrest or detention.”
This new enforcement layer is one of many new systems put in place by Trump and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem to make the process of entering the United States more thorough and lengthy. Their reasoning regarding these efforts is that immigrants are a key source of crime in the nation and that there needs to be more selection and carefulness when it comes to who enters the country. The announcement came with the statement that the new rule will be effective October 4th, 2025.
