How SGA Funds Clubs
How the Student Government Association (SGA) funds clubs is something that most students don’t know. The fact that SGA is the one who decides club budgets is also something that most students likely aren’t aware of.
SGA had a budget of about $200,000 for the 2024-2025 academic year. The largest club budgets were The Comment, the student newspaper, and WBIM, the student radio station, though these clubs are exceptions due to their costs in printing the newspapers and licensing music for the station.
Clubs need to submit requests each year, both for their club budgets and for event budgets. Previously, WBIM was given a separate budget for events, but now, they have to request the money like everyone else.
If a club wishes to request, then they need to be officially recognized by the school and in good standing with the Center for Student Engagement. They also need to have all undergraduates as officers and show that it aligns with SGA’s values.
Clubs can’t exceed a $500 operational budget per semester, a one-time request of up to $2,000 each semester, and an emergency request of up to $1,000. Certain things that cannot be paid for with this are alcohol and tobacco, non pre-approved clothing, academic materials, salaries for members, and events that charge an admission fee.
SGA reserves the right to refuse requested budgets.
