Lament of the Homeless Writer
Well, we’re officially homeless.
Yup, it’s true. I remember it clearly, in the middle of a lively Comment meeting with spirits high and room at full capacity, we discussed our pitches and made jokes as usual. Suddenly, none other than Frederick W. Clark, president of our very own BSU, walked in and cheerfully informed us about how we were being moved in favor of expanding the Commuter Services Office (but not before a delightfully surprised remark about how we had a full house).
Our editor-in-chief tearfully (okay, she didn’t cry, but doesn’t this story sound sadder if she did?) informed us that she already knew the disappointing news, but thoughts of the move were pushed back until this semester.
So, for the time being we are orphaned, put out on the streets, unloved! Our organization is running on nothing but a few farthings…
Listen… I have nothing against commuters. I understand that BSU is a school with a majority commuter population. But can’t you spare a little sympathy for the rest of us? Sure, there’s a temporary office space for the editors, but it’s not big enough to hold meetings in. Luckily, the Center of Student Engagement is kind enough to foster us, but it’s not the same as a place to call your own.
But seriously: evicting one of the longest standing student organizations on campus (running since 1927) with so little thought worries me for other organizations on campus and how they may be minimized and unsupported by the university. An entire summer of construction later, and yet, there isn’t even a completed, expanded commuter office to show for it. Our former home is now a hollow hallway to Bear’s Den ramshackle.
Is this the best you can do, BSU? I surely hope not.
