Lucy Croft and Student Engagement
You may know the name Lucy Croft, but do you know Lucy Croft? Lucy is Vice President for Student Life and has excelled in this position since her start at BSU in January of 2024. I had the opportunity of meeting with Dr. Croft and discussing how her involvement and student leadership makes everyday a great day to be a bear.
Lucy made an immediate connection with Bridgewater. She found a home where she could foster her values of care and compassion. As an undergraduate, she was involved in a sorority, a member of the field hockey team, an orientation leader, and even a part of the programming board. She has great pride for the families and student leaders of BSU.
She has found that, in her role, she has been most rewarded by the personal connections she has made with students. She feels thankful when students approach her for reference requests, and some of the most meaningful interactions involve seeing these students excel beyond college.
Dr. Croft is a very active member of our student life. She has run her own spin classes, taken part in Duck Day, and attended one of her favorite events, the Lewis and Gaines Center for Inclusion and Equity’s Speak Your Peace series. Lucy values student feedback—the series involves students coming together to create a welcoming space for what could be changed to make facilities and resources more readily available. As someone who takes great pride in athletics, especially as a former collegiate athlete, she praises the work done by the students of the intramural and club athletic departments. She upholds the value that there should be something for every student and commemorates the work of the fine and performing arts departments.
To conclude our conversation, I asked if she could give one message to all BSU students and student leaders involved on campus, what would it be? She said a simple thank you. She made the wonderful analogy that enrichment is the heartbeat of a campus, and without heartbeat, there is no life.
