Nepal’s Gen-Z Uprising: A Call for Accountability and Reform
Nepal is undergoing a profound political transformation, ignited by the youth-led Gen-Z protests that have reshaped the nation’s landscape. What began as opposition to a controversial social media ban has evolved into a powerful movement demanding accountability, transparency, and systemic reform.
The catalyst for the unrest was the government’s abrupt suspension of 26 social media platforms on September 4, 2025. This action was perceived by many, especially the youth, as an attempt to suppress dissent and control information. The situation escalated on September 8 when police opened fire on protesters in Kathmandu, resulting in 19 deaths, including that of a 12-year-old child. The following day, demonstrators stormed and set fire to the Nepalese Federal Parliament Building, highlighting the intensity of public outrage and the demand for immediate political change.
In the wake of these events, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned on September 9, acknowledging the failure of his administration to maintain public trust. On September 12, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was sworn in as Nepal’s first female interim prime minister. Known for her anti-corruption stance, Karki has pledged to address the root causes of the unrest, including widespread corruption, unemployment, and lack of transparency in governance. She has announced the formation of an anti-corruption committee and an investigative panel to examine the events surrounding the protests.
The interim government’s response has been met with cautious optimism. While the lifting of the social media ban and the establishment of investigative bodies are steps in the right direction, the true test will lie in the implementation of meaningful reforms.
