Spring Semester Registration Scaries

It’s that time of year—get prepared for the most stress-inducing task of the fall semester, spring schedule registration, a ritual that turns even the strongest Bears to caffeinated strategists. From making multiple plans to classes being filled before registration, it can be a struggle. Let’s talk about how you can be prepared.

Your most helpful resource is going to be the dynamic duo of registration and planning, and my holy grail, Degree Works. The greatest thing you can do to be prepared for the early morning registration time is create a plan, even multiple plans, maybe even a few more backup plans. Classes fill up quickly, and before you know it, your 10 A.M. psychology class has been filled. If you don’t have a registration plan, you could be left with a professor who has a one-star rating on Rate My Professor, or as a night owl, an 8 A.M.

If I can give one tip, find classes that cover multiple attributes, and if you are a double major like me, find classes that align with the majors’ curricula. As outlined in BSU’s curriculum, the school requires core credits, such as Humanities and Fine Arts. You can even take classes that cover both requirements, this way you aren’t scrambling your senior year to finish your requirements.

Here is how you can survive registration morning.

Set an alarm and, then, however many 10-minute increment alarms you need.

Befriend your advisor! If you are a BSU student, you have an advisor. Commuters and residents alike have advisors. They are going to be your best friend. They can do everything from helping you build your schedule to creating alternative plans.

Did I mention to make a registration plan?

For my student employees and student leaders, you know the struggle of managing an extracurricular and school schedule. If you plan on holding a position or an on-campus job, be mindful of creating a schedule that prioritizes your commitments—as well as your personal health! Boost that resume and your mental health.

I wish the best for all my spring registration soldiers. Let the registration begin.
