The 77th Emmys Awards: It’s Victories and Controversies
The 77th Emmy Awards ceremony took place this year on Sunday, September 14th. Although this year was jam-packed with many successful films and television series, one specific show seemed to sweep the floor.
Adolescents, a striking Netflix series following the results of a teenage boy’s murder, resulted in multiple limited series victories. These included Stephen Graham, co-writer and star, winning Outstanding Lead Actor. However, most notable is the victory of Owen Cooper, who is officially the youngest male actor to ever win an Emmy for supporting actor.
The Studio took home 13 different awards, revolving around its immaculate comedy and performance by Seth Rogen. Outside of these awards, a controversial donation tactic by Nate Bargatze, a first-time host, left many audience members with a bad taste in their mouths. Starting by donating 100,000 to the Boys and Girls Club, he then pledged to decrease the donation by 1,000 for every minute that a speech went over 45-seconds for any winner. Many found this tacky, and an overall disgrace to the actual cause that Bargatze claimed to support.
Finally, Hacks actress Hannah Einbinder ended her speech with the closing remarks: “Go Birds, f*** ICE, and free Palestine.” Many found this aspect of her speech to be upsetting, while others viewed it as an inspirational way for an actress to utilize her platform and spread awareness to the injustices taking place in our world.
Taking account of the awards, notable accomplishments, and controversial aspects of this year’s Emmys, it surely is a ceremony for the books.
