The Art of Loving by Olivia Dean—A Review
On September 26, up-and-coming artist Olivia Dean released her album The Art of Loving. The Art of Loving is a pop, neo-soul album featuring some popular tracks such as “Nice To Each Other” and “Man I Need”—songs you may have heard via TikTok.
The album reflects the feeling of a flower patch on a sunny evening. It has somewhat of a timely feel, something you don’t see in today’s genre of pop music. She immerses the audience by creating an image with her lyrics. She allows listeners to make their own interpretation of the music, emitting a feeling behind every song.
One track that stood out to me was “Let Alone The One You Love.” With a mix of powerful vocals and impact-moving lyrics, the track stood out above the rest. The lyrics reflect the loss of trust and how love becomes restrictive. Dean carries out the meaning of the song with an intimate yet powerful style.
The song “Loud” is a slight branch from the rest of the album, creating an almost ominous, haunting sound. Being one of the more vulnerable tracks, Dean reflects on her relationship and how the image doesn’t reflect the scenario. The song creates a climax in the album, leading into her track “Baby Steps.”
