United Nations Commission Declares Israel Is Committing Genocide in Gaza

On September 16th, a commission within the United Nations (UN) declared that Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip. The commission is pushing for action to put an end to the genocide while also punishing those responsible for it, as it is a violation of international law. This new report from the UN is based on evidence gathered from October 7th, 2023, to July 31st, 2025. After intense investigations into the genocide unearthed factual legal findings on attacks committed by Israeli forces on Gaza, the commission was able to determine that Israel’s attacks are acts of genocide. The commission found that Israel has committed four of the five genocidal acts as defined under the 1948 Genocide Convention. Since at least one of these acts was found to be true of Israel’s actions, the UN commission was then able to successfully declare the conflict a genocide.

All of this came on as soon as Israel began its offensive push on Gaza City in efforts to take control of the area. With around 350,000 Palestinians (estimate from the Israel Defense Forces) already having evacuated Gaza City, Israel’s relentless insistence on pushing further into Palestinian territory was further proved when troops were pushed into Gaza City on September 17th.

Israel has already killed more than 65,000 Palestinians, a lowball estimate for the true number of lives lost and unaccounted for. Even throughout all of these attacks, deaths, and emotional wounds that Israel is bringing on, they are still claiming that their occupation being a genocide is “distorted and false,” regarding the UN commission’s result. Stories emerge constantly of civilians losing their homes and loved ones as Israel’s constant attacks continue to pummel what is left of Gaza.

This has changed how people in the United States have viewed the genocide, as 49% of U.S. adults now say Israel has gone too far, a 9% increase from 2024. Unfortunately for the people of Gaza, support from the US and other nations has been lackluster due to the country’s staunch alliance with Israel, even as reports such as the UN’s explicitly state just how ferocious and vile Israel’s attacks are. There are still little talks of peace, as both Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu have expressed the need for Israel’s dominance over Gaza and a cleansing of the Palestinian people.
