BSU Fall Sports Continue to Roll

In what has been a very successful couple of weeks, Bears’ fall sports have started off their postseason action with a bang. From multiple awards to playoff success, the Bears will end the fall on the highest of notes.

To start off, Men’s Soccer has won the MASCAC tournament with a 1-0 win over Mass Maritime. A goal with just over five minutes to go in the game by Ryan Healy propelled the Bears over the top, sending them to the NCAA tournament. The team will be taking on Rowan in the first round, marking their second NCAA Division III tournament appearance in three years.

In what was a great run for both teams, the Women’s Soccer and Field Hockey teams both unfortunately fell short in the semi-finals. For Women’s Field Hockey, it was a heartbreaking double overtime defeat to Worcester that knocked them out of the playoffs. As for the Women’s Soccer, it was a 2-0 defeat to Westfield State that resulted in the Bears falling just short of the final.

The Women’s Volleyball team found major success, winning the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season championship outright for the first time since 2006. With a sweep over Fitchburg State, the team, with a 15-4 overall record, will be the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament for the first time in 19 years.

Award season also graced the Bears in a big way for both Soccer teams. For the Women, Samantha Souza headlined the all-conference first team after a historic season, along with Abbie Zuber and Emelia Westwater. Kallie Rose also received an honor, as she was selected to the all-conference second team. These four women were spectacular all season long, contributing massively to the team’s success. For the Men’s Soccer team, four players were selected to the all-conference first team. Filippo Mucci, Hector Bucio, Tyler Chang, and Gavin Norton all earned spots on the first team, contributing heavily to the team’s tile run and NCAA tournament hopes.

With winter sports approaching, BSU will look to carry the winning momentum and continue where the Fall teams left off. Regardless of end result, we as a University can be extremely proud of the grit, hard work, and heart every team showed this fall season!
