MLB Players Enter the Betting Scandal Fold
In a shocking development, two pitchers from the Cleveland Guardians, Emmanuel Clase and Luis Leandro Ortiz, have been charged with allegedly collaborating with bettors to manipulate individual pitches in Major League Baseball (MLB) games.
The indictment, revealed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, states that Clase initiated the scheme in May 2023. A three-time All-Star and two-time American League Reliever of the Year, he allegedly communicated with bettors during games via cellphone to deliver specific pitch types and speeds.
Ortiz is accused of joining the scheme in June 2025, accepting bribes of around $5,000 and $7,000 in two games to intentionally throw first pitches in crucial innings as balls.
Federal prosecutors claim the bets resulted in at least $400,000–460,000 in illegal winnings for the conspirators, who used the players’ inside information to place “prop bets” on pitch outcomes.
The charges against both players include wire fraud conspiracy, honest services wire fraud conspiracy, conspiracy to influence sporting contests by bribery, and money laundering conspiracy. If convicted on all counts, they face a possible maximum sentence of up to 65 years.
The league and team have committed to full cooperation. The MLB announced it contacted federal law enforcement at the start of its investigation and is continuing its probe. The MLB has also initiated a nationwide mandate that prohibits any bettors from putting money down on a specific pitch type and/or velocity.
Meanwhile, Ortiz was arrested in Boston, with his bail being set at $500,000; Clase was detained upon landing in New York by the Department of Justice on indictments of sports betting and money laundering.
