Should Halloween Costumes Be More Niche?
The realization that it was already October was quite shocking to say the least. September had felt like an eternity this year, and I desperately wanted to join in on the Halloween fun. The problem… I brainstormed for a bit and after much thought, I had thought to dress up as the protagonist of the visual novel, Higurashi When They Cry, Keiichi Maebara, but then, as soon as I made this internal decision, it hit me…. do people even know who that is?
Walking around Spirit Halloween this year, one thing I noticed a lot was that there weren’t many specific costumes. While I obviously didn’t think I would find a costume of a character from a 20+ year old visual novel, I definitely expected to see more costumes of characters from more modern things. To my surprise, everything I saw was mostly either traditional or very well known. While there’s nothing wrong with that of course, I really think that we should bring back more niche costumes instead of just focusing on the classics.
Can it be a little awkward when people ask you who you’re supposed to be? …To be honest, not really. Picking a niche costume actually shows a lot of creativity, and it can be a really cool way to learn about what kinds of media people enjoy. Again, no disrespect to traditional costumes. If you dress up as something iconic, that’s cool too! The point I’m making here isn’t that all people should pick hard to guess costumes, but rather, people should be able to be creative.
While I ultimately decided not to dress up as Keiichi this year (I’ll save that for comic con), I instead got a few props such as a mask, robe, and voice changer to dress up as SCP-049 and I am happy with my decision.
