Student Artist Spotlight: Gianna Esposito
I had the pleasure of speaking to Gianna Esposito (she/her), the leader of BSU’s Art Club. An avid artist, Gianna has been drawing for as long as she can remember. She uses a variety of media to create her art, from simple pencils and pens to charcoal, pastels, and even digital means. Originally wanting to pursue a career as an animator, Gianna is now studying to become a high school English teacher.
“I’m deeply inspired by the world around me, including more sensitive topics such as addiction, mental illness, and poverty,” she told me. Growing up in a small town led to a lot of free time where she honed her craft, drawing constantly: “At some points, my wrist would go totally numb!”
Art Club meetings are currently held in RSU 204 on Tuesdays 5–6 PM. The club is open to everyone with no need to sign up to attend a meeting or event. With new activities every week, there’s always something new and creative happening at the club—from bookmark making to pumpkin painting, charcoal drawings, and so much more. Above all, the goal of Art Club is to encourage everyone regardless of identity to participate in the variety of events they hold and feel safe when in the Art Club space.
“We live in a very divisive, unsettling time,” she told me. “A lot of artists are a part of all sorts of minority groups. I myself am a part of a few, and I have felt the pain of exclusion … my main goal as the leader of Bridgewater State’s Art Club is to give all artists, regardless of their background, an accepting and uplifting community to express themselves.”
Gianna had one last message: “I am happy to have brought so many people together with my club in the past year I have owned it, now go out and support all of the other BSU artists out there!”
