Trump Administration Begins Demolition of White House East Wing

Towards the end of October, the Trump Administration began their demolition of the East Wing of the White House. The plans are to replace this wing with a 300-million-dollar ballroom decorated and planned by Trump. Officials under his administration have said this project will modernize the East Wing and have promised it will adhere to historical precedents as well as legal barriers. However, Trump failed to sign off on a deal with the National Capital Planning Commission, a key group in projects such as this, before sending for the destruction to begin.

The size difference is the major change, as Trump’s plans include a brand new 90,000-square-foot ballroom, much larger than the already 55,000-square-foot main building of the White House. This required a lot of space to be removed from the East Wing, including a movie theater and garden made for Jacqueline Kennedy.

The East Wing was first constructed in the year 1902, serving as a public entryway for the White House. Many speculate that the reason why Trump would want to reestablish this wing is because if he were to change the way that the East Wing looked, it would leave a larger impression of Trump’s impact on those who enter the building. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the ballroom was meant to be a strong and stable addition to the East Wing. She commented on how past presidents have made their mark on the White House with renovations and changes.

Several opposing this renovation have pointed out that this construction is much more significant than past changes. The American Institute of Architects commented on how this destruction of the East Wing went on without any adherence to process or review. They shared concerns with how this may be a reflection of how Americans should think of and treat other historic buildings around the country.
