Trinity Rodman: Breaking Barriers in Women’s Sports
Trinity Rodman recently broke barriers in women’s sports, signing a three-year contract with National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) team Washington Spirit and becoming the highest paid female soccer player in the world.
Being the youngest drafted NWSL player at 18, in 2021, Rodman was drafted to the Spirit. In recent light, there has been uncertainty of her re-signing with the team. Thursday, January 22, she silenced the rumors. Rodman is set to earn two million annually, including bonuses, making it one of the most significant contracts in women’s sports.
Rumors surrounding her contract came into play with the conversation of a possible move to the European league. One downside of the NWSL is the salary cap, which the Euro league does not have. With a salary cap of 3.5 million, there was recently a rule put into place where “high impact players” such as Rodman, can be signed for up to 1 million dollars over the salary cap.
Rodman, an asset to the NWSL, has made significant impact on and off the field. She quickly became the youngest NWSL player to reach 50 goals, winning the championship in her debut season. She has quickly become a face for the league, having a strong online presence, drawing in viewers of all ages.
Just a few days after her ground-breaking contract deal, she took the field as captain of the US Women’s National Team. She quickly established her leadership, creating success on the field whilst leading a young, less-experienced team.
The NWSL is growing faster than ever, with the league recently expanding to Boston, playing out of Gillette Stadium and alternate locations during the world cup. Trinity Rodman is planting new seeds for women’s soccer, and it’s only growing from here.
