Nancy Guthrie’s Mysterious Disappearance: A Brief Timeline
On the evening of January 31, Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today Show host Savannah Guthrie, was dropped off at her home in Tucson, Arizona. It was a typical evening for the 84-year-old up until the early hours on February 1, when a masked man approached her door. The video shows the man attempting to cover the camera several times before finally disconnecting the device. Nancy Guthrie’s pacemaker disconnected from an mobile app around 2:00 AM, and she has not been heard from since.
The following morning, Guthrie was discovered missing by a friend, who quickly alerted the family. They arrived at Guthrie’s residence and promptly called 911. The investigation that followed these events has been a whirlwind.
The day following the report of Guthrie’s disappearance, authorities announced that they believe Guthrie was taken against her will. Not long after, a local television station, KOLD-TV, received an email that appeared to be a ransom note with two deadlines. At this time, concern surrounding Guthrie’s well-being began to heighten as Guthrie had been without her medication for a day.
On February 4, three days after Guthrie’s disappearance, her three children—Savanna, Camron, and Annie—took to social media asking their mother’s abductors to reach out directly to them to provide evidence that their mother was alive. Two days later, they posted another video revealing that they had received a message and would pay them. However, even after sending the payment, their mother was never returned to them.
On February 10, the doorbell footage of the masked man was released by the FBI after it had been inaccessible to investigators previously.
On February 12, the FBI came forward with some details they had gathered from the doorbell camera footage. They concluded the man was of average build, that his height was around 5’9” or 5’10”, and that he was wearing a black, 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker backpack. The man was also wearing gloves in the video that appeared to genetically match a glove found two miles from Guthrie’s home. That glove was tested for DNA but did not match anyone in the national DNA database or any DNA found on Guthrie’s property.
On February 16, Guthrie’s family was cleared as suspects. Two suspects have been detained, but both have been released and cleared. The investigation continues as the world holds its breath, hoping that, somewhere out there, Nancy Guthrie is alive.
