Student Organization Spotlight: Biology Club
If you’re interested in biology and looking for a group of people to share that passion with, look no further than the Biology Club! Whether it’s conducting experiments, like extracting plant DNA, or just hanging out with your fellow members, there’s plenty to do from week to week.
Talking with the club’s treasurer, Jakhai Nicholson, gave me lots of insight into all the great reasons to join Biology Club. She’s a sophomore biology major with a concentration in cellular and molecular science.
“I joined Bio Club because I was looking for a community of people I could relate to when I first came to campus as a transfer last spring,” she told me. “To me, Bio Club is special because I’ve made lots of connections here and found lots of opportunities through it. It’s also nice to walk around campus and see familiar faces.”
Connection is the club’s ultimate goal. You may think a club like this is exclusive to only biology or STEM majors, but everyone, regardless of their major, is welcome to participate.
Meeting to meeting, you may find the club doing lab experiment rotations, hosting a board game night, throwing holiday parties (food included), or even hosting info sessions where you can learn more about internships and research. A favorite club activity of the members includes the microscope competitions. Students race against each other to focus their microscope on an object, with even the chance to win a prize.
“Another thing that makes this club special is you have so many people to talk to about the major with,” Jakhai added, “information about classes and professors, opportunities for biology students—even help with homework, on occasion, if needed.”
