The 2026 Oscars: An Overview
The Academy chose its winners Sunday night, and there were some shocks.
The 98th Academy Awards were held on Sunday, March 15, in the Dolby Theater in Hollywood. They were aired on CBS, hosted by Conan O’Brien. The night was expected to be a three-way race between Sinners, One Battle After Another, and Marty Supreme. All the films were nominated in the major categories, and each took home awards from the smaller award shows.
Frankenstein won for Best Makeup, Best Set Design, and Best Costumes, while Amy Madigan would win Best Supporting Actress for her role in Weapons. F1 would take home Best Sound, while Sentimental Value would win Best Foreign Picture.
KPop Demon Hunters would score two wins with Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song (Golden). One of the biggest surprises of the night was that “The Singers” and “Two People Exchanging Saliva” would tie for best short film, making this the seventh tie in Academy history.
The most shocking part of the night was that Marty Supreme was shut out, winning not a single award in any of the categories, turning the race into a duel between One Battle After Another and Sinners. Sinners would take home Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Actor for Michael B Jordan’s duel performance as both Smoke and Stack.
One Battle After Another would take home Best Casting, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Picture.
The awards were watched by nearly 18 million people, down about 7% from last year. With three years to go until they begin airing on YouTube, CBS hopes the 100th Academy Award show will provide them the largest audience they’ve had in years. Along with this, the Academy hopes viewership on YouTube will increase and keep the show culturally relevant.
