“Fruit Love Island” and the AI Slop of It All
Having been on TikTok for about five years now, I have encountered plenty of bizarre and, frankly, brain-dead content on the platform. However, with the rise of AI- (Artificial Intelligence) generated videos, it has been impossible to avoid “slop”-adjacent videos, even if it has only been for the past year. The pinnacle of such videos is a new AI-generated series titled “Fruit Love Island.”
Around March 13, the page “ai.cinema021” was birthed and started outputting many videos. In a couple weeks, the page had grown exponentially, gathering millions of views and followers. Not only was this series completely made from generative AI, a harmful piece of technology to both the environment and our brains, but it was also a lazy recreation of what most of the audience had already seen in another format.
An argument could be made that Love Island itself is a lazily put together reality show that promotes hookup culture and pushes gender roles. Personally, I do not see much point in this argument, however true it is, simply because shows like this have and will continue to exist as long as television/media consumption is a thing. What I believe to be a more important takeaway is that the slop of “Fruit Love Island” is one of the most harmful and intellect reducing things to ever see the internet. There is so much beauty and creativity not only in the real world but also on the internet itself. Artists have dedicated parts of their lives to putting their work on the internet, and even content creators do some good by avoiding AI. I would urge any who read this to disregard any “Fruit Love Island” videos you see, or any copycats, and choose to consume something a bit better for the world and for your health.
