Project Hail Mary Soars across the Stars—A Review
Project Hail Mary soars across the stars. The space epic focuses on Dr. Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) traveling to a distant sun to learn why it is not dying so that he can save Earth’s sun from burning out. It opens with him waking up from a medically induced coma and not remembering why he is in space. Over the course of the film, we see flashbacks to what led up to his leaving.
Gosling is the main actor in the film, with many scenes featuring only him. He has to carry the film on his back, and fortunately for us, Gosling goes the extra mile. You can feel his emotions—his sadness, his worry, his confusion, and his fear. This is the type of role that gets you an Academy Award.
Outside of Gosling’s outstanding performance, the score is incredible, shifting from sci-fi sounding to classical to modern pop. The set design makes you feel like you’re in the ship, especially during the zero gravity scenes.
The greatest part of this film is the cinematography. This is one of the most beautiful and breathtaking films I have ever seen. Space looks beautiful, and the various forms of light they look through keeps the image looking different every time.
The film opened to a strong 80 million dollars, followed next weekend with another 54 million dollars. It’s one of the best openings to a non-franchise film in years. So far, it has grossed 390 million dollars worldwide.
The film is a must-watch in theaters for anyone who loves movies.
