Student Organization Spotlight: Women in STEM
Women in STEM is a student-run organization on campus that intends to create a supportive community where women can inspire each other while promoting gender equality in a male-dominated field. Through STEM-related events and networking opportunities, the organization aims to increase representation and create a space for peer connection.
President of Women in STEM, Jennifer Chan, reflects on her time as a member of the organization and her goals as a leader, “I wanted to take part in Women in STEM to meet more people within the STEM field. I especially wanted to be President because it’s an amazing leadership opportunity where I am able to create fun events in hopes of bringing the STEM community together and giving people a place to relax and escape from their homework/responsibilities.” As an upperclassman and leader, she hopes to be a mentor, providing guidance to underclassmen.
Women in STEM hosts a variety of events, included previous gatherings such as slime making, bracelet making, and scrapbooking. The club recognizes the heavy workload of STEM majors, so events are seen as a beneficial brain break.
Even though the organization is focused on women in STEM, they are an inclusive club that allows anyone to join or to attend events, regardless of their major. They strive to create a community that is welcoming to everyone.
Women in STEM has plans to further engage with the BSU community, including by putting on more fun events like plant making, bookmark making, and another slime event.
